Excellent Apulian Olive Oil Directly From The Mill
The De Carlo olive mill near Bari dates back to 1598 and is one of
the oldest in Italy. Today the De Carlo family grows various varieties
of olives on centuries-old trees on 130 hectares of land. In order to
maintain the high standards of the mill, olives are harvested and
crushed “within a few hours”.
At the De Carlo company shop in the small town of Bitritto, visitors
can taste and purchase different types of award-winning extra virgin
olive oil, including one organically produced oil. We chose the
elegant Favolosa, plus the delicate, fruity and balanced Peranzana,
both monocultivar varieties and delicious.
Visitors can also acquire olives, vegetables, bruschetta spreads,
pasta sauces, or dried tomatoes, all produced and packaged at the
company. The baby artichoke hearts in extra virgin olive oil may be
the best I have tasted: small and delicate, no artificial flavor at all,
very little vinegar, just pure flavor. All vegetable products come in
100% De Carlo extra virgin olive oil.
Tips:
Some of the hand-made ceramic bottles for extra virgin olive oil resemble the traditional small Trulli homes of Puglia and make lovely gifts.
Guided tours of the oil mill including a tasting can be booked online.
